What Are Veneers and What Can They Fix?

Porcelain veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth shaped porcelain that are custom made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front surfaces of the teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.

Porcelain veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile. They can often be alternatives to crowns and the ideal solution in treating many dental conditions.

As with most dental restorations, porcelain veneers are not permanent and may someday need replacement. They are very durable and will last many years, giving you a beautiful, long lasting smile.

If you are looking to create a uniform, white, and beautiful smile, veneers can help to improve the following conditions:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Severely discolored or stained teeth
  • Teeth are too small or large
  • Unwanted or uneven spaces (gaps)
  • Worn or chipped teeth

What is the Process of Getting Porcelain Veneers?

process of getting porcelain veneersGetting veneers is a fast, noninvasive way to achieve a beautiful smile. At your consultation with our Glendora cosmetic dentist, Dr. Lee, she will perform a thorough examination and listen carefully to your concerns to understand what you want to achieve. Together, we will review all your options and provide advice and recommendations to get the best results.

  • First appointment: Once you decide which teeth to treat, we will prep each one so your veneers will fit comfortably and look balanced. The thin layer of enamel of the front surface of the tooth is removed to allow for the thickness of the veneer.  A mold or impression of the tooth is taken, and a shade (color) will then be chosen by you and Dr. Lee. Dr. Lee is very conservative, and she will make sure to leave most of your natural tooth structure intact.
  • Second Appointment: The tooth is cleansed.  Bonding cement is placed between the tooth and the porcelain veneer. A special light beam is used to harden the cement. The porcelain veneer is now bonded securely onto the tooth surface.

FAQs About Porcelain Veneers

Our team is very experienced in providing porcelain veneers, and we make sure to give you all the information you need to make an informed decision. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about porcelain veneers.

Do I Have to Put Veneers on All My Front Teeth?

You can choose to treat one or more of your teeth based on your preference. Our team is flexible and will work with your needs and budget. Dr. Lee will make sure you agree with the final plan before proceeding with the procedure.

Veneers can last a long time with proper care. You need to brush and floss daily, the same way you do with your natural teeth. They can last up to fifteen years if you are careful and avoid using them as tools or biting down on hard, crunchy foods. Porcelain veneers, like natural teeth, are susceptible to damage.  If a porcelain veneer breaks or comes off, the patient should consult with Dr. Lee as soon as possible for repair and/or re-cement.

Veneers are made of porcelain, which is stain-resistant. Their color stays consistent over the years, providing you with a bright smile for many years.

The cost of your veneers will vary. It will depend on how many teeth need treatment and their position in your smile. Some insurance plans will cover a portion of the cost if it is a procedure necessary to maintain your oral health.

Dr. Lee uses a small amount of anesthetics to ensure that patients have no pain or discomfort during the treatment. Dr. Lee will numb the area before the procedure, so there will be little or no pain. There may be some discomfort after the numbing wears off, and if you get more than eight veneers, your gums and jaw may be sore for a little while. You can typically alleviate any pain with over-the-counter medication.

The most important thing to remember if a veneer comes off is not to panic. Save the veneer and call our office. We will get you in as soon as possible. Do not try to replace the veneer on your own or use any type of glue in your mouth.
